Treat it as contaminated
Sewage is the most contaminated category of water restoration contractors deal with. Carpet, pad, drywall and insulation it reaches are generally removed rather than dried, and hard surfaces are cleaned and sanitized before drying starts. It isn't a shop-vac job.
In Bellevue, the city asks you to call its Wastewater Operation and Maintenance Division straight away if sewage is coming up inside your home when no water is being used, on the 24-hour line 425-452-7840 (Bellevue sewer page).
City pipe or yours?
- The city's part
- Bellevue maintains the main sewer lines, including service connections in the city right-of-way and dedicated easements.
- Your part
- The city says homeowners are responsible for issues in their own sewer pipes (preventing sewer backups).
- Slow drains
- The city suggests calling a private service for slow drainage or a suspected blockage, likely in your side sewer.
- Locating pipes
- The city doesn't locate pipes on private property; its sewer information line is 425-452-4187.

Questions
Common questions
Should I keep using water while I wait?
No. Don't flush, shower or run appliances until you know the line is clear, or you'll add to the backup.
Does homeowners insurance cover sewer backup?
Not under a standard policy, according to the Washington Insurance Commissioner; it can be added as optional coverage (OIC).
Does Bellevue have a backwater valve program?
We didn't find one on the city's sewer pages. Ask a plumber whether a backwater valve suits your house.
